I’ve been eyeing the CHARLES & KEITH Gabine saddle bag as soon as it was launched. The bag features a classic half-moon silhouette and the signature embellished gold buckle, in a wide range of trendy color options for this season. However, to be able to wear bright and striking colors while remaining sophisticated, there are a few rules you need to practice. Whether you are afraid of colors or simply want to find new ideas for your wardrobe, here are the 5 tips to color-match and/or color block your clothes like true fashionistas.

1/ Find colors that match your skin tone

Many Asian people think that if your skin is not pale or light, you should not wear bright colors. I myself am a petit and has a rather neutral skin tone, so for a long time I was intimidated with wearing colors. But hear me out, I figured out you just need to find colors that suit your undertone. 

Find out if your undertone is warm, cold or neutral. You can easily Google the telltale signs of your skin tone!

• Cool skin tones can go with: navy blue, light purple, lilac purple, pink, gray
• Warm skin tones can go with : brown, green, olive green, yellow, orange, coral, beige
• Neutral skin tones go well with most colors, especially jade green, red, white, pink

2/ Get acquainted with the color wheel

Color coordination can be considered a science. There are some basic rules of color matching so that you can have a fashionable outfit. The easiest way is to use the color wheel to mix colors. Either use colors next to each other, or opposite each other on the wheel. If you see someone on the street wearing colorful clothes and looking kinda “off”, it is because the colors they choose do not follow the rules of this wheel.

For example, red and pink tones are next to each other, so they work very well together. Yellow and purple, or green and orange are opposite each other, so choosing these colors for your outfit would be perfect. Even simpler, choose different tones in the same color family to coordinate, for example, light purple mixed with dark purple, mustard yellow combined with lemon yellow.

What if you want to combine colors with patterns? If you like to wear a floral top with lots of mixed colors, team it up with pants or skirts that have the same color as one of the colors on the shirt.

3/ Keep it simple

When you have decided to wear an outfit with outstanding colors, you should minimize the details and decorations on your outfit to make the outfit more elegant. It is best to choose items that are classic, for example, high-waisted pants, blazers, A-line skirts, pencil skirts. With such simple items, even with extremely striking colors, the overall outfit is still trendy in any context.

4/ Mix with neutral colors

This is my favorite way of dressing up in the summer. If you don’t want to look like a “chameleon”, you can combine big, bold colors with more neutral items. A floral shirt can go with a black blazer, a pastel blazer can go with jeans or a beige pencil skirt… That’s why in our wardrobe, there are always items like basic t-shirts, white/black/beige blazers, black/beige pants to mix with louder pieces.

5/ Shine through accessories

If you are still not sure about using bold colors in your outfit, accessories are where you can experiment with colors! For me, it will be bags with eye-catching colors, such as pink, metallic, blue … to make the most basic outfits more interesting. In addition, multicolored earrings and necklaces are also making a comeback and are a simple way to elevate your outfit to a new, more radiant look.

I want to share with you the never-before-seen behind-the-scenes of the 14 magazine covers that I appeared on in the past years!

1. Thể thao văn hoá đàn ông – June 2017

This was the first magazine cover I had right after my appearance in the movie “Jailbait”. This was also a rare cover on which I wore a swimsuit since I have always been shy when taking sexy photos. But I am really fond of this cover, the image looks youthful, lively and sporty.

2. Dep Magazine – November 2017

This cover marks the first time I was featured in Ms. Ha Do’s Dep Magazine cover, the first time I worked with Louis Vuitton, and the first Vietnamese fashionista to be invited to an international event by Louis Vuitton (Cruise 2018 collection presentation in Hong Kong). The moment I received the invitation, I was completely overjoyed. My hard work had paid off!

Unfortunately on the shooting day, I got food poisoning, I wanted to cry during the whole photoshoot
and almost passed out from the pain, but luckily the shooting was successful and the cover
is extremely satisfactory!

3. Travellive – December 2017

A beautiful and lovely magazine cover. The photoshoot was in Sapa so the weather was
comfortable, our team worked effectively, and the session went on really successfully!

4. L’Officiel – Februrary 2018
This cover marks the first time I was featured on L’Officiel, a fashion magazine that always brings us something new and groundbreaking. I was wearing a Louis Vuitton outfit and you can also see that the make-up and hairstyle layout was rather peculiar, right? I usually never braid or put my hair up this high, but the team encouraged me to challenge and rebrand myself for once. The result was this very artistic photoshoot, I love it!

5. Her World – August 2018
This is one of my most mentioned magazine covers because I truly like this photo: eccentric, somewhat rebellious but still glamorous and minimalistic. This was also the first time I collaborated with Cartier in a campaign. I still have the Juste Un Clou bracelet with my name Chau Bui engraved on it, which was given to me by Cartier on that occasion. It is such a personally meaningful gift to me.

6. Dep Magazine –  September 2018

The September issue’s cover is always the most important one for a fashion magazine. To be featured on Dep Magazine’s September issue with Kelbin Lei and Cartier is definitely one of the most memorable landmarks in my career.

7. Wanderlust – October 2018This is a travel-themed magazine, so apart from dressing up and putting on beautiful make-up, we also had to be able to show the landscape and the design of the hotel. I almost didn’t recognize myself on this cover since the make-up and outfits were very charismatic, don’t you think? I’m happy for having a chance to have a photoshoot with Wanderlust in Danang.

8. Elle – November 2018

Here’s another magazine cover that marks a lot of “first times”: first time wearing a Gucci outfit on a cover, celebrating the 8th anniversary of Elle Vietnam. Elle, for me, has always been a youthful, lively, and artistic fashion magazine, so this cover perfectly captures the magazine’s essence.

9. Harper’s Bazaar – July 2019This is the first time I was featured on Harper’s Bazaar cover, one of the most popular and pretigious fashion magazines in the world. To have a chance to work with fashionista Kelbin Lei on the 8th anniversary of Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam is an especially meaningful memory.

10. L’Officiel – Issue 08/2019I remember this photoshoot very well as Kelbin and I were posing on a piece of glass while the photographer shot from below. The poses in this photoshoot were really special, since Kelbin and I needed to coordinate perfectly from our facial expressions, accessories, outfits, hairstyles, etc in order to have the perfect shot.  It was also quite a long session, it took about 3 hours before we came to a satisfactory stop.

11. Dep Magazine – September 2019This cover was shot in Thailand, in an extremely special location: an old aircraft cabin that has been transformed into a restaurant. I worked with photographer Thai Pham on this photoshoot. Although Thai and I had collaborated many times and he was familiar with my best angles and poses, the session was still exceedingly challenging for the temperature in the cabin went up to 44, 45°C. I was also wearing Gucci’s Fall/Winter collection, so it was even more suffocating. The result was a cover that was exceptional from the layout, the lighting to the vibe.

12. Elle – November 2019Once again I was featured on Elle’s cover during its birthday month. This was a wonderfully cheerful photoshoot: everything from the outfits to the make-up and the set designs were in bright colors. I was wearing a dress designed by designer Cong Tri. I was so touched as he altered this amazing dress from his New York collection so that I could fit into it for the shoot! 

13. Dep Magazine –  March 2020This photoshoot was taken in an ancient house in Bangkok, and it was the first time I wore Dior on a magazine cover. My hair and make-up layout look quite different, don’t they? I think this look really embraced the strong feminism spirit of Dior! My most memorable moments of this photoshoot was when I had to jump into a pool to pose without knowing how to swim, then my skin was all covered with allergic rashes… and in the end, Ms. Ha Do (the creative director) didn’t choose any of the photos in the pool to publish *cry*.

14. Elle – October 2020This is the most recent magazine cover I was on. I was wearing an outfit from Louis Vuitton. I like the delicacy and elegance of this cover, and it was also loved by the Global Louis Vuitton team.

Looking back at these magazine covers, I really would love to thank all the people working with me in fashion magazines, brands, on-set teams that have always supported me in my career. Hopefully, I will be able to come back to work after this lockdown and see everyone again soon.

Regardless of body type, age, appearances, tall – short, skinny – plus-size, old – young, as long as your fashion sense is well – received by others, you can be a fashionista. Since there is not yet any institute that trains professionally for this job, lots of my followers asked how they could study or get prepared to become a fashionista. More importantly, many people also wonder how fashionistas make money. This is where I answer all of your questions!

What should I study to become a fashionista?

First of all, make sure you have these 2 must-have conditions: a passion for fashion, and an eye for style. These will be the two key elements to dictate the success in your long-term career development.

Next you will need to cultivate specific skill sets, study about fashion industry, learn more about photography, media & communications. You can also take classes in stylist, modelling, photography/editing, videography, digital marketing…

What skill sets do I need to be a fashionista?

• An eye for style: Fashionistas must have an eye for style. To become a fashionista, it’s not simply about putting on a nice outfit but also daring to think outside the box, to creatively mix & match outfits that makes people go “WOW”.

• Fashion knowledge: Getting hold of new fashion trends, aesthetics, brand awareness will help fashionistas gain more credibility to their followers and brands. 
• Individuality: It’s not enough just looking nice, you will also have to be unique. Many fashionistas are famous trendsetters whether they are 7 or 70 years old, underweight or plus-size. I believe that their individuality, uniqueness and stories matter, too, which are reflected to their personal styles that fans will fall in love with.
• Photography skills: Good photos are the most effective way to market yourself and reach your audience. If you want to be a fashionista, learn how to take and edit photos well. Some fashionistas also have their own team to take care of their public image.
• Know how to market yourself: Don’t just dress well and wait for compliments. Fashionistas need to be proactive via multiple media platforms, such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Youtube, blogs, magazines, books…
• Be passionate & hardworking: Around the last 3 months of 2019, I only slept 3-4 hours/day because I went from fashion weeks to fashion weeks, not to mention other movie and music projects… I reckon most everyone who succeeded will need to go through this rite of passage in their career path. I still remember how hard my team and I had worked before my first Seoul Fashion Week. Months of preparation in exchange for a few minutes of appearance in a public event where dozens of cameras would be facing me. Brands also do not want to work with someone who just wear nice clothes. They prefer personalities and attitude for a long term collaboration.

I was on the verge of crying when I was struggling to be on my own for the 2019 New York Fashion Week. Without passion, it would be nearly impossible to overcome these hardships.

How do fashionistas earn money?

• Advertisements: from brand ambassador contracts, PR, reviews, products, personal channel ads…
• Business: Thanks to the fame and personal platforms with massive engagements, fashionistas can introduce their own merchandises and products and become business owners
• Consultancy: Consulting for fashion brands, provide mentorship in personal branding, marketing, public speaking, content writing courses,..

• Modelling or acting: If you know how to progressively seek for opportunities, the title of a fashionista can bring many chances in the entertainment industry.

You could also work with talent agencies who already have professional teams to assist you in personal branding and monetizing on your platforms.

Last week, I and my talented neighbor Tang Tang produced this photo shoot 100% at our “home studio” with minimal equipment and cre. Thanks to the creative lighting setup, the kitchen, garden, and living room were transformed into a magical, fantasy world. All of clothes used in the shoot came from local brands: Công Trí, Tú Quanh, Fanci, and Mien Oi. I always wanted to help promote local designers, not only to Vietnamese audience but internationally as well. I’m super proud to be able to wear these amazingly innovative and eccentric designs.

I have a passion for sunglasses of all colors and shapes. For me, wearing the right sunglasses would make the whole look cool. Whether your style is minimalist, chic, or feminine, there will always be a pair of sunglasses that will fit you best. Which glasses do you think I look best in?

2. Bucket hat

The bucket hat has become popular for the last few years, especially among the street style community. There are many ways to mix outfits with bucket hats, but I like to pair it with casual outfits such as oversized T-shirts, crop tops, and baggy pants.

3. Earrings

I don’t often wear too feminine, girly clothes. But earrings are the accessories that I always wear when going out. Wearing different types of earrings can completely change the shape of your face. I also often change earrings depending on hairstyles or when I want to change the vibe of an outfit. For example, large, sparkling statement earrings can make a monochrome outfit more sophisticated. Remember to check your whole outfit before going out though; your earrings should elevate the look, not drowning out your clothes. 

4. Chunky shoes

Chunky shoes are the most used items in my wardrobe, because they are super comfy and help me cheat a bit of my height. Many fashion brands have promoted the comeback of this 90s trend. My favorite combo is mixing chunky shoes with wide-leg, high-waisted pants to make my legs appear longer. Complete the look with a croptop for a touch of sexiness.

5. My cross-bearing necklace

The necklace is an indispensable accessory for me when going out, not only for fashion reasons but also because it is a gift that I cherish. I always feel lucky, confident, and protected every time I wear this necklace. Having such a special accessory is definitely part of everyone’s personal style, right?

In the past year, I have learned more and more about reducing my carbon footprint and waste. It can start from my own wardrobe as well.  In this post, I will share simple changes in my wardrobe that makes it more eco-friendly. 

1. Shop from local brands: Imported clothes will need to be transported cross continents to arrive at your door. Clothes from local brands do not. Simply support small businesses around you by looking for brands that produce locally.

2. Care for the materials: I started to learn more about fabrics and materials that are used to produce clothes. Learning about the origin of the products you’re buying is an excellent habit to be more eco-friendly. Read into the brands’ fine prints. If possible, I’d prefer to buy organic materials, such as cotton, silk or wool. Organic materials are produced without the use of pesticides or toxic chemicals, which can cause permanent damage to soil and water resources. 

3. Don’t throw your clothes away: Never throw your unused clothes in the trash! Give your clothes to charity, or sell them at second-hand markets. Even fixing up clothes that no longer fit or have holes in them also extends their life cycle to 24%, which in turns reduce the habit of shopping for new clothes. Swapping clothes in garage sales is also a great idea to give your clothes a second life. 

4. Pay attention when doing the laundry: Washing clothes too often is bad for your clothes and consumes a lot of electricity and water. I usually limit my laundry to maximum 3 times a week. I also like using laundry products made from natural ingredients and drying clothes using sunlight rather than a dryer.

5. Organize your wardrobe: Show your wardrobe some love and organize it often. You can watch a video of me attempting to clean out my closet here! Organizing your closet is also a way for you to see all the things you have, making it easier to decide what you wear everyday and reduce the habit of shopping for new clothes.

6. Shop less: Finally, I am practicing the habit of shopping less and only buying the things I need. When you shop less, you will form a habit of buying more durable clothes, wearing them longer, instead of buying clothes that are only worn once or twice. Besides, this also helps me to be more creative in mixing and matching my outfits!

Here’re the must-have items in my capsule wardrobe!

1. White T-shirt

Needless to say, this is the most quintessential item in a capsule wardrobe, no matter what trend or style you pursue. A white t-shirt is almost a magical piece that can be mixed and matched in any style, from casual, chic, to feminine and even menswear. For me, I prefer a white tee that fit bigger on me for a casual look. Because this is an item that I wear a lot, I tend to be rather picky with my white tees. They need to have a boxy fit, keep their forms, and are made of sustainable materials.

2. Baggy pants

When I’m not filming or attending an event, you will always see me in my baggy cargo pants. In the past few years, the 90s made a comeback, so this is the perfect time to adorn your favorite cargo pants and chunky shoes. Baggy pants are also easy to mix, whether with sneakers or high heels. For me, I like wearing baggy pants with chunky shoes, as it looks stylish and elongates my legs.

3. Oversized blazer

If you have seen my Instagram or Youtube channel, you would know how much I love the oversized blazers. This has been a popular trend, too, as the blazer adds a sense of style and retro in your look. The great thing about this jacket is that it is easy to mix with many outfits. Even when you’re lazy, just put on an oversized blazer with a casual outfit like a t-shirt and biker shorts, and you’re good to go. The only downside is that I live in Saigon where the weather sometimes is not ideal to wear such a big coat.

4. Crop top

A rrop top is a sexier version of a white t-shirt. And it goes great with most items I list here as well: crop top and baggy pants, crop top and oversized blazer, crop top and jeans… It makes everything more sexy and interesting.

5. Bikini top 

The last item in my capsule wardrobe is a bikini top! If you are into fashion, you must have noticed bra as a top is on the rise. The trend was spotted on IT Girls like Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, or Hailey Bieber. My favorite combo is a bikini top with a dad blazer and jeans for a chic weekend brunch outfit. An oversized shirt outside a bikini top is the perfect Instagrammable outfit for your next vacation. Next time you’re out shopping for bikinis, choose one that has a great form and is easy to mix with the rest of your wardrobe, because this trend is not going away any time soon.

What I love about it is I can use it both as a fashionable hair accessory and something to protect me from the heat. 2. Oversized outerwear

Oversized outerwear over a bikini is a very simple but highly stylish combination for summer. Depending on the material of the outerwear, you can style it differently. For example, wearing soft materials like chiffon or silk will give you a feminine look. My personal favorite is styling a kimono jacket or a boyfriend shirt over a bikini to create that minimalist style. A tip: if your bikini has bold patterns or details, try choosing simple outerwear for a balanced look. 

3. Straw hat

Straw hat is undoubtedly the signature item of every summer photoshoot that will effortlessly breathe charm into your summer outfit. Straw hats now come in different styles and sizes, from wide-brimmed to Panama hats, for you to mix and match. For an extra fabulous look, you can also style a straw hat with a bandana. 

4. Cargo pants

A bikini with cargo pants is the Gen Z of summer style. You can mix the outfit with either a simple slip-on for a day on the beach or high heels for a more sophisticated look. A pair of short jeans and bikini top can also be a great combo under the sun.

5. Beach slippers

Beach slippers are a growing trend in the fashion world, especially when summer is coming. Beach slippers have different styles and materials for you to mix and match. Bikinis also go smoothly with straw slippers. The straw material is comfortable to wear, and adds a natrual flair to your look.
